Am I/You a sociopath?

This is a question that’s been on my mind for a long time for various reasons. I just found this article on the net that poses 16 questions that supposedly can define whether or not you are…

I shall give my own answers below each question.

1. Are you superficially charming and intelligent?

1. Are you superficially charming and intelligent?

For sociopaths, the answer to this question is yes.

Now, this is an interesting question because I do not think there is ANYTHING superficial about my charm or intelligence.

2. Do you have delusions or other signs of irrational thinking?

2. Do you have delusions or other signs of irrational thinking?

For sociopaths, the answer is no. They’re super-rational, coldly so.

Again I’m 50/50 to this question. I do have some delusional ideas about my abilities to achieve certain things BUT I am also coldly rational about other things in life (Especially relating to others)

3. Are you overly nervous, or do you have other neuroses?

3. Are you overly nervous, or do you have other neuroses?

Sociopaths are rarely nervous or anxious. They aren’t scared of risk.

I’m a bit 50/50 on this – I do quite often feel nervous or anxious but then will take incredibly stupid risks at the drop of hat. I also have an ego the size of the Death Star.

4. Are you reliable?

Sociopaths are unreliable.

Not particularly.

5. Do you tell lies or say insincere things?

OMG – yes – ask anyone who knows me…

8. Do you have poor judgment, and fail to learn from experience?

8. Do you have poor judgment, and fail to learn from experience?

Sociopaths think they’re smarter than everyone else, but they take risks the rest of us would not and don’t learn from punishment.

Again – OMG yes…

9. Are you pathologically egocentric, and incapable of love?

9. Are you pathologically egocentric, and incapable of love?

Sociopaths are.

My partner says my answer should be Yes to this….

10. Do you generally lack the ability to react emotionally?

Sociopaths don’t experience emotions the way the rest of us do.

I have to agree with this.

Sociopaths aren’t self-reflective or meditative.

True – never bother/can’t.

12. Are you responsive to others socially?

12. Are you responsive to others socially?

Interestingly, sociopaths often have to fake their reactions and responses to the rest of us in order to get through their days without being “spotted.”

True – I can be falsely “interested” a lot of the time.

13. Are you a crazy party fiend?

13. Are you a crazy party fiend?

Sociopaths engage in “fantastic and uninviting behavior with drink and sometimes without,” Cleckley says. Thomas adds that sociopaths often crave (meaningless) sex more than the rest of us, too.

Yet again – my nickname is “Animale”….

14. Do you make false suicide threats?

14. Do you make false suicide threats?

Yep, sociopaths are drama queens.

Been in love “thousands of times”…

16. Have you failed to follow a life plan?

16. Have you failed to follow a life plan?

Sociopaths have difficulty holding down jobs. (It requires long-term obligations to others.)

There’s no surefire way of self-diagnosing yourself as a sociopath, as sociopaths also tend to lie in tests like these.

There's no surefire way of self-diagnosing yourself as a sociopath, as sociopaths also tend to lie in tests like these.

But if you recognized yourself or others in these questions, you might want to seek professional help.

Thomas points out that many sociopath do not want to end up in prison, or as psychotic outcasts. They can use their skills to be successful in business, in ways that less single-minded people cannot.

They’re just not your friends, is all.
