Satellites….

Got a new satellite dish yesterday. Yay! I’d been missing Friends (the program, not you bunch on FaceBook)

Got me thinking about satellites though.

One of my favorite songs is A New England by Billy Bragg. It was also covered by Kirsty MacColl who sadly isn’t with us anymore. Stupid motorboat accident.

It has these great lines –

I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you’d care

Hope is a strange thing. Wishing for better things to happen is a bit weird too.

The ’cause and effect’ principle comes to mind. I.e. – something has to happen for something else to happen.

Isn’t that true of life as well? Will good things happen just because you wish they would?

Sadly, probably not. 😦

So what are you going to do about it?

Good question.

I’m probably going to wish I could get off my arse and do something….

Rules of Conduct.

Civilisation can sometimes suck.

Why?

Because in our attempts to be ‘civilised’ we actually create situations that work against each other and cause, rather than prevent, harm.

What?

A police officer will and can, by law, restrain someone that could or may cause harm to themselves or others.

Fair enough.

But because they are not medically trained they may unwittingly cause a situation that will result in the restrained person dying or suffering unnecessarily.

So what? They probably deserved it. Else why were they restrained and arrested?

It’s a given that ignorance of the law is no defence. So, why then is lack of information or respect of a person’s medical condition justification for manslaughter or sadism?

Well. They have a uniform.

Oh yeah. That’s ok then.

I had such a cool idea….

I had SUCH a good idea….

Really? What was it?

I can’t bloody remember….

It can’t have been that good then?

It was! It would been earth-shaking! It could have changed everything. Eradicated hunger, poverty and war…. Better than the wheel AND sliced bread.

So how come you can’t remember it?

OOhhh! I just did!

SO TELL US!

I can’t….

Why not?

If I told you, I’d have to kill you!

You didn’t remember did you?

*Sigh*

Peter Griffin facepalm

True. But that’s probably a good thing.

Why? You were going to make the world perfect! (Allegedly)

Yeah. But what I would have to complain, criticise and write about then?

Well, hopefully nothing.

Tough. I’m selfish like that…. 😉

Maximise your potential.

You should maximise your potential.

Nah. Can’t be bothered.

Be all you can be!

Nah. Requires too much effort.

Strive! Succeed! Take it on the chin if you fail!

Yawn.

You are a beautiful, valuable person! Know your own worth!

Pfffttt…

Do something creative! Inspire others!

Too lazy.

What do you do all day?

I post crappy feel good memes on Facebook.

It’s ironic.

Oh man, It’s Sunday

Sunday’s. Not that keen. They don’t rock my boat. Bit flat. Listless. Boring. Really awful films on TV. Pressure to eat a nice meal. Pfffttt.

Pfffttt. Using that too much. ‘Pfffttt’ that is.

Had a discussion yesterday. I’ve noticed that I’ve used words and concepts, written posts, that use a lot of terms like God, the Devil, Heaven, Hell etc. a lot over the past few months. I questioned myself and asked for a third party opinion.

Do you think religion has snuck up on me?

Possibly. You do talk about it a lot.

Does that mean I’m becoming religious?

Probably not. You always say you’re not and why. But you do have a moral side (occasionally) and language doesn’t always leave too much room for expressing that without the obvious allusions.

It’s a pain. I try to be ‘nice’ (not always, but sometimes) and go around in circles. What’s up with that?

Maybe nothing. You can only play with the cards you’re dealt.

True. Unless you cheat. But that goes against my personal code. If I can’t win honestly then I’d rather not play the game.

A fellow writer asked a question on the Devil’s invention – Facebook – the other day. “I need a moral code for my fantasy characters. Any suggestions?” (And yes. I do know I just did it again)

I didn’t comment but the thought that went through my head was – How about the ten commandments? They don’t suck. They actually make a lot of sense. Does that make me a Christian or just nice?

I’m going with nice. Christianity sucks (Just my opinion. Don’t get offended. I feel the same about ALL organised religions)

I don’t have any issues with nice. Or respect. Or helping each other. I do have issues with law and order, people with their heads stuck up their bottoms etc. But nice? I can live with that.

Well there I go. I guess. I’m not religious. I’m just nice.

Well probably not. But I do try.

It only takes thirty seconds …

NO! I do know what you’re thinking. (Perverts)

What can you do in thirty seconds? Half a minute.?1/120 of an hour?

Anything? Nothing? Wreck a relationship? Get married? Conceive a baby? Break the sound barrier?

Pfffttt. 30 seconds. That’s nothing.

Could you kill someone? Come up with an idea that changes the world?

If you trained. Maybe you could put up a tent? Do the washing up? Decide that you hate your job and change it?

Maybe you could Google and find the answer to the question that’s been bugging you?

WHAT could YOU do in 30 seconds?

Write a blog maybe? 😉

The fine art of thinking…

Do you think enough? Do you have the opportunity to think? Do you want to think? Or is it too much effort and distressing…

Sure, I think all the time.

Sure you do. You think about ‘stuff’. About work, what to eat, where to go, what to do, and so on. And you worry. About your health, about your family, your relationships etc.

What else should I think about?

Ooh. Good question. The obvious answer is ‘What is the meaning of life?’, but that would be a cop out and way too difficult. No one has come up with a definitive answer to that one. Except may be Douglas Adams.

How about taking a minute to think about who you are? Why do you believe what you do? Where did those beliefs and behaviours come from? Why do you act/react in certain ways?

Are you really a Christian? A Conservative? Are you really against fox-hunting? Did you really enjoy that film?

Or was it just ‘easier’ to think that way? Go with the flow?

I’m not suggesting that any of those things are wrong or trying to change your mind about them. Everyone is free to think what they want and in this day and age our private thoughts are one of the few private things we have left.

I’m very lucky in some ways. I have a lot of time on my hands due to health issues but this gives me the opportunity for self-examination and I’m finding that some of the thoughts/beliefs I’ve always had about myself are shockingly wrong. But that’s ok. Some of them are upsetting but some of them also make me stronger.

I think everyone should think more. Not just go along with what others tell you to think.

Give it a try.

You’ve got a brain. See if you REALLY CAN’T believe it’s not butter.
