Trigger Happy…?

When you get diagnosed with a mental health condition you soon hear about “triggers”.

A “trigger” is a thought or statement or action that might “trigger” negative behavior.

Before long “triggers” are all you fucking hear about. Go on any “support” group on FaceBook and it’s “Be careful not to trigger”, Think before you “trigger”… “Warn” if what you say might trigger.

Seriously, how can you be part of a group that’s about depression, self-harm and suicide yet not actually be able to talk about it in case you “trigger” someone into doing it?

What is the point? And believe me, these people don’t talk about fluffy animals and cooking recipes all the time instead.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think people should make statements on social media that may encourage someone to harm themselves or take their own life. I just think you should be able to express your own thoughts/experience with those subjects without being lambasted for potentially “triggering” someone.

In my experience no-one else had any impact on my decisions to kill or harm myself. It’s a purely self-initiated act and definitely never “caused” by someone mentioning the idea or suggesting that I do it.

Facebook Admins sometimes have their heads way too far up their own rectums – of course, the irony being that they’re mentally ill themselves???

  1. This, a million times over. I am a member of quite a few MH groups and I see trigger warnings for all sorts…. pictures of KFC to the mere mention of the word “court”. It makes you wonder how these people survive at all. I trigger myself, no one else does. If I have the urge to slit my wrists, it is not because someone else typed words and I read them.

    1. So glad to hear your comment! I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one. I’m pondering if I should start a group about MH where people can only talk about positive/good things? Would you be interested in being an Admin? We could block anyone being whingey and negative? Great fun to be had…?
